Supplemental: Braudel in New York
The Long Twentieth Century: Money, Power, and the Origins of Our Times, Giovanni Arrighi, 1994.
As I mentioned in the review, The Long Twentieth Century is a leaner, nastier extension of the theory of history and capitalism that Braudel expounded in Civilisation & Capitalism. It will be unsurprising then, that instead of the fun and esoteric old-school ‘GIS’ maps Braudel includes, Arrighi strips it back to flow charts and time-series plots. All the figures below capture core aspects of Arrighi’s argument.
