Supplemental: Tarnished Gold
Globalizing Capital: A History of the International Monetary System, Barry Eichengreen, 2018.
The charts I chose for this supplemental all relate to the topics I discussed in my review: the classical gold standard and the interwar mission to recreate it. The first two reveal vital aspects of the classical gold standard: the persistent deflation it induced, and the heterogeneity (what Eichengreen terms “shades of gold”) which characterised it. The others show just how brief the interwar gold standard was, and (somewhat tangentially) the role of US capital exports during the period, respectively.
